This module provides an introduction to important skills that students need to succeed in a digitally-connected world.

This module addresses the following standards:

  • The online teacher understands the current standards for best practices in online teaching and learning. OTE.1.K.1
  • The online teacher understands the role of online teaching in preparing students for the global community of the future. OTE.1.K.2
  • The online teacher knows how educational standards and curriculum align with 21st century skills. OTE.9.K.2

Read pages 7 - 11 and pages 36 - 44 of Digital Learning Now!'s Digital Learning Report Card 2012, and consider the following:

  • How are governmental agencies responding to online learning trends?
  • What is some of the rhetoric supporting or opposing these trends?
  • What is going on in your state in this regard?

ISTE Standards

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) has developed a series of technology standards for teachers (ISTE Standards-T), students (ISTE Standards-S), Administrators (ISTE Standards-A), and others.  Explore these standards, especially the teacher and student standards, and consider:

  • What are the most important skills, attitudes, and competencies for students to gain today?
  • What are the most important skills, attitudes, and competencies for teachers to gain today?
  • What would you add to these lists?
  • What might you take away?

Common Core Technology Standards

Unlike many previous state-level standards and the ISTE Standards, Common Core Standards embed technology components into subject area standards.  Explore this list of Common Core English Language Arts standards that incorporate technology, and consider:

  • What are the pros and cons of weaving technology standards into content area standards (instead of having them separate like the ISTE Standards)?
